Yonex High End 'Z' Badminton Shoe Comparison - 65Z vs Aerus Z vs Eclipsion Z vs Comfort Z

There are plenty of incredible badminton shoes out there, and it can really depend on your personal preferences, needs, and playing style to know which type of shoe is best suited for you. So today, we'll be discussing and comparing the four high-end Yonex Z badminton shoes: the Yonex 65Z4 (UK, buy here), the Yonex Aerus Z2 (UK, buy here), the Yonex Comfort Z3 (UK, buy here), and the Yonex Eclipsion Z3 (UK, buy here).

Let's get into it!

Weight Comparison Of Yonex Z Series Badminton Shoes

Firstly, to clarify, I wear a Yonex size 280mm, which is equivalent to a UK size 9.5 or a US size 10, so the information I give here will be based on these sized shoes! Also, in the UK, Yonex sizes are generally half a size down compared to normal shoes. So if you're coming from other brands or standard shoe sizes, go up half a size. The best way to accurately get the correct size is to measure your feet in mm. You can also check out my Yonex shoe size chart here!

Now in terms of weight, the Yonex Comfort Z3 badminton shoes are the heaviest of them all, weighing 370g per side due to the amount of material and padding on the shoes. Next, we have the Yonex Eclipsion Z3, which was not much lighter at 367g per side.

Then, we have the Yonex 65Z4 badminton shoe that comes in at 325g per side, and the lightest is the Aerus Z2 at only 271g per side. Also, all of these shoes do have a wide fit option, but whether they'll be available in all parts of the world is another question, so make sure to check your local retailers for more details!

Appearance & Materials Comparison Of Yonex Z Series Badminton Shoes

Both the 65Z4 and Aerus Z2 feature a seamless upper design, reducing stitched sections for improved flexibility and comfort. The Aerus Z has had this seamless design since its original launch and also uses a single-piece upper reinforced with a semi-transparent coating for added durability. The upper does feel thin but the material still feels secure when you're laced in.

However, the seamless design on the 65Z only came in the 4th generation of the shoe and it maintains a classic shoe structure. The white colour is also very clean which will look great on court!

On the other hand, the Eclipsion Z3 has returned to a traditional design, from the Z2 which was a boot-like, sock-fit design. It's similar to the 65Z but with softer and thicker padding which gives it that added stability. Overall, it's a great comfort and fit!

Lastly, the Comfort Z3 uses rubber-like synthetic materials around the toe box area to create a durable and hard-wearing shoe. They are not as soft and flexible as the Aerus shoes and they feel like they are made of thicker materials to protect your feet. I also love the look of the Comfort Z3 with the neon yellow and orange to the black contrast. The ladies' white version looks amazing too!

For the outsole, the 65Z4, Aerus Z2, Comfort Z3 and the Eclipsion Z3 all feature a radial blade design which according to Yonex, improves the grip by 3%. However, the Eclipsion Z3 has a unique design where the outsole is a single piece of material going along the outside of the foot arch, instead of having two separate pieces of material at the top and bottom like in the other 3 shoes.

The Aerus Z2 and Comfort Z3 have a fully sealed bottom, relying on their mesh uppers for ventilation, while the Eclipsion Z3 and 65Z4 include ventilation holes underfoot to regulate temperature. So if you're someone who's worried about getting very hot feet from playing badminton, you won't have to worry with the Eclipsion Z and 65Z.

Each shoe also comes with Yonex’s signature Power Cushion+ for shock absorption as well as the 3D Power Graphite Sheet. However, the insole grip does differ with the Aerus Z and Comfort Z having more slippery insoles, whereas the 65Z and Eclipsion Z have insoles that are wavy on top which offer better grip.

Playing Feel & Performance Comparison Of Yonex Z Series Badminton Shoes

In terms of wear experience, the 65Z4 required no break in time which is usual for this range of shoe. It fit snugly, wrapping around the foot comfortably, especially on the upper side. However, since it has a precise fit, those with wide or narrow feet might want to opt for those respective models as there wasn't much extra space on either side of my foot. Overall, the flexible upper makes movement effortless, making it a solid all-around choice for most players.

For those prioritising speed, the Aerus Z2 is the lightest of the lineup, giving a close-to-the-ground feel due to its thinner cushioning. While this enhances quick footwork, prolonged high-intensity play might lead to more fatigue, especially on harder court surfaces. It’s an ideal tournament shoe for players who want to move fast and freely, but consider how it might impact your body for heavy training sessions.

The Comfort Z3 is the most cushioned of the bunch, offering maximum stability and support. It is the heaviest shoe here and it does feel slightly stiffer in both its cushioning and upper section so it might need some time for breaking in before you play with them on court. However, it does provide excellent grip and heel support, making it great for players who need extra protection on landing.

Similarly, the Eclipsion Z23 is built for durability and stability, offering a super solid feel without slowing you down. With the thicker padding, it definitely does provide great foot protection. I did think the higher heel support area might catch the back of my heel at first, but once you put it on it's super comfortable. Even though it's the second heaviest shoe here, it didn't feel heavy at all and was actually really plesant to play with.

Long story short, if you want Formula 1 performance, go for the Aerus Z. If you want ultimate protection and stability, go for the Comfort Z or Eclipsion Z. And if you want a cross between speed and protection, go for the 65Z! Make sure to use the code 'CKYEW' for extra discounts and you can also check out my in-depth reviews of each shoe below:
